Discover the summer residence of the Prussian Queen Elisabeth Christine, featuring its original state rooms, magnificent banquet hall, and unique Rococo interiors. At this historic site, learn how the Nazi regime denounced modern art as “degenerate” and stored and sold thousands of artworks at Schönhausen Palace. The newly opened section of the permanent exhibition presents original artworks and their stories, alongside documents that reveal the motivations of those involved in the exploitation and sale of art, as well as the consequences of exclusion for the affected artists. The close connection between art and power is also reflected in the traces left by the GDR at the palace—from Wilhelm Pieck’s official residence to its role as a guest house for state visitors such as Fidel Castro and Mikhail Gorbachev.
