For more than fifty years, it has collected, preserved, researched and presented artistic, historical, archaeological and ethnographic heritage. The museum was established in 1976 to mark the 600th anniversary of the city of Kraśnik. Initially, it was housed in the historic ground-floor rooms of the former monastery. In 1981, the institution was moved to temporary premises located at the entrance to the monastery courtyard. Later, the building at 2A Józefa Piłsudskiego Street was adapted to house the Regional Museum. The institution acquired a two-storey brick building dating from the interwar period, with a total area of 313 square metres, more than half of which was devoted to exhibition space. From the outset, the core of the museum’s artistic and historical collection consisted of memorabilia connected with the 24th Uhlan Regiment, which was stationed in Kraśnik between 1922 and 1939. After the collections were separated from the historical department on 6 July 1995 – the seventy-fifth anniversary of the regiment’s formation – a branch of the Regional Museum in Kraśnik was opened at 7 Piłsudskiego Street under the name the Museum of the 24th Uhlan Regiment. On 7 October 2020, the Regional Museum in Kraśnik and its branch, the Museum of the 24th Uhlan Regiment, reopened following extensive renovation and modernisation works. Since 2022, the institution has operated as the Museum of the 24th Uhlan Regiment in Kraśnik, a branch of the National Museum in Lublin. The museum features modern, spacious exhibition halls displaying original military decorations, documents and rare photographs related to the history and traditions of the 24th Uhlan Regiment and the 1st Polish Armoured Division commanded by General Stanisław Maczek. The institution also organises numerous temporary exhibitions and offers an extensive educational and cultural programme.
