Located at 41 Floriańska Street, it is the house where Matejko was born, lived, worked and died. Created at the end of the 19th century by the Jan Matejko Society, the museum has been a branch of the National Museum in Krakow since 1904. The exhibition features the authentic furnishings of the artist’s home, personal memorabilia, documents, medals, his extensive library and a selection of his paintings, sketches and studies representing all stages of his career. The museum also preserves historical props, costumes, textiles and weapons used by Matejko as references for his large historical compositions. Visitors can also see the painter’s reconstructed studio and the original design cartoons for the polychrome decoration of St Mary’s Basilica.
