The Museum of Photography in Krakow (MuFo) is Poland’s only museum entirely dedicated to the history and art of photography. Its collection of more than 90,000 items spans early photographic processes, documentary and studio photography, experimental works, and contemporary artistic photography. The holdings include stereoscopic images, autochromes from the early 20th century, historical documentary photographs, and works by major Polish photographers such as Jan Bułhak and Edward Hartwig. The museum also preserves an extensive set of historical cameras, lenses, darkroom equipment and accessories illustrating the technological development of photography from the 19th century to the present. MuFo operates two sites: a modern exhibition space on Rakowicka Street, which houses the main permanent exhibition “What Makes a Photograph?”, and a historical villa on Józefitów Street. The museum also hosts temporary exhibitions, workshops, educational programs and research projects focused on photographic heritage.
