The Prague City Gallery is one of the most important galleries in the Czech Republic, which focuses its exhibition activities mainly on modern and contemporary art. It collects, preserves and professionally processes the art collections of the City of Prague. Currently, the GHMP exhibits in seven buildings: BÍLKOVA VILA The studio villa in Prague-Hradčany was built by František Bílek in 1910-1911 according to his own plans. Bílek was primarily a sculptor and graphic artist, but his religious conception of art led him to the need to create entire environments in which his works would be applied in a multifaceted way, fulfilling his mission to spiritualize human life. His architecture was ideologically motivated. COLLOREDO-MANSFELD PALACE The Colloredo-Mansfeld Palace is one of the outstanding examples of Prague palace architecture with a rich architectural development combining elements of the High Baroque and later Rococo and Second Rococo modifications. The Baroque building, located in one of the most exposed places in old Prague near the Charles Bridge, was built on the foundations of Romanesque and Gothic buildings and Renaissance buildings. Among its owners we can find a number of interesting personalities, from Count Jáchym Ondřej Šlik, executed for his participation in the Prague Estates Uprising, to the Jesuit Order, the Elector of Saxony, the cruel Count of Breda and Paul Henry, Prince of Mansfeld-Fondi. In 1736-1737, the prince had the original palace, probably designed by Giovanni Battista Alliprandi, rebuilt by Franz Ignaz Preé in a highly Baroque style. The final New Rococo look was then given to the interiors of the building in the 1860s by the Auersperg family, who then converted a large part of the palace into a luxury apartment house around 1900. HOUSE OF PHOTOGRAPHY The origins of the Prague House of Photography (PHP) date back to 1989, when the Aktiv freestyle photography was founded - an association of photographers whose aim was to find suitable spaces for exhibitions. At the beginning of the 1990s, it became the Prague House of Photography Foundation, and in 2005 it became a public benefit corporation of the same name. DŮM FRANTIŠKA BÍLKA V CHÝNOVĚ The Chýnov "cottage" was František Bílek's (1872-1941) first own dwelling, which he built in 1898 on his parents' remote property. After a fateful conflict with J. V. Myslbek (1892), the artist returned to Chýnov for several years, where he created his key early works, including the large Crucifix (1896-1901). The environment of his hometown and the surrounding countryside shaped his specific mystical expression, mixing religious ideas with admiration for nature. HOUSE BY THE STONE BELL According to the latest building-historical research, the origins of the House at the Stone Bell date back to the second half of the 13th century, when a longitudinal side building was built behind the massive tower corner with massive perimeter walls. The oldest construction phase has been preserved in the cellars and on the ground floor of the southern wing. MUNICIPAL LIBRARY, 2ND FLOOR The Municipal Library on Marian Square was built in 1925-1928 according to a project by architect František Roith, a pupil of Otto Wagner, a professor at the Vienna Academy. The building was conceived as a cultural institution with a wide range of uses including exhibition, lecture and concert halls. TROJA CASTLE Troja Castle is a remarkable and exceptional building. Rather than a castle, it should actually be called a villa: it echoes the splendid Roman suburban villas that its builder, Václav Vojtěch Count of Sternberg, saw on his long journey. He was so captivated by the magnificent houses in the midst of endless gardens that he decided to bring a piece of the "Eternal City" to his homeland. The young count was lucky in his choice of location and the artists who were to make his dream come true.
