Better youth fares. More opportunities.
Affordable rail travel is essential to ensuring that young people can fully participate in education, employment, volunteering, cultural exchange, and civic life across Europe. While rail is one of the most sustainable ways to travel, ticket prices remain a significant barrier for many young people. If Europe wants the next generation to choose trains, those journeys need to be accessible and affordable.
As part of the Youth on Track coalition, with this open letter, we call for stronger and more inclusive youth fares across Europe's rail network. Our recommendations aim to make rail a realistic option for more young travellers, helping to increase mobility, support social inclusion, and contribute to Europe's climate goals. We invite decision-makers to work together with young people to build a rail system that is accessible, equitable, and fit for the future.

About Youth on Track
Youth on Track is a coalition of Civil Society Organisations made of youth NGOs (EU&U, Erasmusbytrain, European Youth Card Association, Generation Climate Europe, JEF Europe, World Scouting), consumers’ groups (BEUC, European Passengers’ Federation) and environmental groups (Transport & Environment, Europe on Rail) aiming to leverage the quality of rail services in Europe to make it the most convenient way of travel across Europe, especially for young travellers. Together, the coalition represents millions of young people, rail passengers, and climate advocates across Europe.
